How many weddings are being planned in your local market?
How many weddings are being planned right now in your local market? If you don’t have a great answer to that question, then how do you build a sales and marketing plan? The truth is, most event venues don’t have their finger on the pulse of local demand, which means they are guessing at it.
How many people can you sell to? In other industries, we’d call that your addressable market. The wedding industry is unique because that number is always changing. Just as hundreds of thousands of people get married, hundreds of thousands more become newly engaged and begin the shopping process all over again. Understanding how many people are newly engaged in your local market gives you more power than you’d think.
Why This Number Is Your Leverage
Roughly 2 million weddings happen in the U.S. every year, generating tens of billions in spend—but that national number is close to useless for your budget. What matters is what's happening in your market: your county, your radius. National averages are built from whichever platform happened to survey its own customers, which skews the picture. The vendors who actually price and budget with confidence are the ones who've gone and found their local number.
Once you have that number, everything downstream gets easier to defend: your pricing, your growth targets, and—most usefully—your marketing budget.
The Reverse-Engineered Budget
Here's the part most venues skip: if you have the right data points, you don't have to guess at a budget at all. You can reverse engineer it.
The data points you need:
- Total search volume — how many people are searching for venues like yours, in your market, every month
- Target impression share — what percentage of that demand you actually want to own, versus ceding to competitors
- Average click-through rate — of the people who see the ad, how many of them click
- Average cost per click — what it costs, in your specific market, to capture each of those searches
- Your close rate — what share of clicks turn into tours, and tours into bookings
- Average sale price — average revenue per wedding
Put those together, and you’ve got a business case.
The Magic Formula:
(search volume x target impression share x average CTR = clicks) x avg cpc = budget
Now let’s fill in the data
(10,000 searches x 80% target x 4% CTR = 320 Clicks) x $3.00 CPC = $960 budget
That simple formula tells you exactly how much to budget to dominate search results for a given keyword.
That's a budget built entirely from data you can defend, not a number that felt right last year. And as a sanity check, industry rule of thumb puts marketing spend at roughly 5-10% of target revenue — if your reverse-engineered number lands in that range, you've got two independent methods agreeing with each other, which is a very persuasive thing to bring into a budget conversation.
This Is What Buy-In Actually Looks Like
Most venues ask for a marketing budget the same way: "We should spend more this year." That's a request. It's not leverage.
Compare that to walking into the same conversation with: "There are X weddings a year in our market. Search demand for venues like ours runs at Y searches a month, at a cost of Z per click. To hit our booking goal, we need this specific ad budget—and here's the math." That's not a request anymore. That's a business case, built the same way any other budget in the business gets built—from demand, not from feeling.
It's also the difference between a marketing plan that survives its first budget review and one that gets quietly cut the next time revenue tightens.
